• government is the term generally used to describe the formal institutions through which a land and its peopleare ruled 
• liberty means personal freedom and a government who's powers are limited by law 
• Equality is the idea that all individuals should have the right to participate in political life and society on equivelant terms 
• democracy means placing considerable political power in the hands of ordinary people 
• Americans look to government in times of war 
• In 1929 after the great depression congress passed legislation that brought the government into the buisiness of home mortgages, farm mortgages, credit and relief of personal distress
